Abstract


Objectives: This study was conducted to collect the fundamental data. This was done for carrying out further developments in the school dental clinic program by evaluating the oral health knowledge and the attitude subjected on the teachers who had experienced the program.

Methods: The subjects were a total of about 186 teachers from 8 elementary schools established school dental clinics in Ulsan metropolitan city. Data analyses were done with SPSS program (ver 13.0) through frequency analysis and chi-square test.

Results: For teachers, the recognition level for sealant effect was 93.0% and for fluoride effect was 91.4%. The recognition level for feeling healthy condition of their own oral health status was 72.0%, and the experience rate for oral health education was 54.8%. The teachers who had ever heard about fluoride application think that the school dental clinic provides fluoride application more than teachers who had not heard about fluoride application, such as it is in fissure sealant. 99.5% of the teachers approved the treatments of the school dental clinics. 87.6% of teachers recommended the establishment of school dental clinics to other schools. The factors such as teacher¡¯s subjective evaluation of oral health, reception of oral health education, yearly dental treatment experience and four times or more tooth brushing per day did not influence the significant differences whether or not the operating school dental clinic approved.

Conclusions: In order to succeed in the school oral health program, a new preventive oral health education for teachers was demanded. Systematic support from the authorities and from the teachers of the school would also be important.
